- Finding Jack Charlton was recently released and televised
- It focuses on the mercurial talents of Jack Charlton and his impact on Ireland
- It is an incredible, honest and open documentary which will stay with you beyond the first watch
Watch. It. Now. It’s that simple.
It is a stunning portrait. But where it crucially differs from other amazing biographies (Maradona) is that it shows Jack Charlton before his death last year as he, and his family, dealt with his dementia.
Finding Jack Charlton focuses on a complex character filled with contradictions.
The proud Englishman (and World Cup winner) who managed the Republic of Ireland, during the Troubles. The man who had a deeply fractured relationship with his own brother (Bobby Charlton) yet, as footage shows, was open, affable and a fantastic after-dinner speaker.
Finding Jack Charlton
- Directed by Gabriel Clarke
- Clark had previously directed Bobby Robson: More Than A Manager and Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans
- The film has charity partners also including Alzheimer’s Society (UK) and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland
The old footage of Charlton playing and managing is beautifully pieced together, yet the real heart of this documentary comes when we see the current day. His struggles with dementia and how it impacts him and his family are heart-wrenching to watch.

Another standout during this fabulous documentary is the character of Paul McGrath and Charlton’s relationship with the troubled player.
McGrath charts his own life (which in itself could become an amazing documentary on its own) and the immense impact of Charlton on it.
